Hole bassist Melissa Auf Der Maur has quit Hole to work on “solo projects”, though she is also tipped to replace D’Arcy Wretzky who has just quit Smashing Pumpkins according to US web site All Star today.
Auf Der Maur replaced Kristen Pfaff after Hole‘s original bassist died of an overdose in Seattle in 1994 and has never actually been a contracted member of the band; she is not bound by their contract with Hole‘s label Geffen as she was only a ‘hired hand’ musician. The report suggests that she may join the Pumpkins on the same basis if she does not leave music altogether.
Quoting an unnamed “source close to the Hole bassist”, the report suggest that she may take up photography as a full time career.
There has been no official statement from Geffen on the split.
