The Drums, Everything Everything also nominated for gong

Hurts have been crowned Best New Band at the Shockwaves NME Awards 2011.

The Manchester duo beat off competition from Beady Eye, Everything Everything, The Drums and Two Door Cinema Club, who were also nominated in the category.

The trophy, supported by Boxfresh, was presented to them at the O2 Academy Brixton in London tonight (February 23) by comedians Noel Fielding and Matt Berry.

“I’d like to thank the Devil and Dave Grohl,” singer Theo Hutchcraft said as he picked up the award. He added: “Thanks for keeping pop music alive.”

Hurts performed ‘Wonderful Life’ with a troupe of ballerinas earlier at the ceremony.

Last year Bombay Bicycle Club won the award.
