Questlove and Charli XCX defend Iggy Azalea following questions over her credibility

The Roots' drummer describes hit single 'Fancy' as a "game changer"

Questlove and Charli XCX have defended Iggy Azalea amid questions about her credibility in the hip-hop community.

Azalea and Charli XCX are currently Number One in the US with their single ‘Fancy.’ However, the rapper has faced criticism from both her peers and music fans over the fact that she is Australian yet raps in a strong American accent.

Speaking to Time, The Roots’ drummer Questlove acknowledged that Azalea is divisive but thinks that ‘Fancy’ is a “game changer” of a single.

“I’m caught in between. You know, we as black people have to come to grips that hip-hop is a contagious culture,” he said “If you love something, you gotta set it free. I will say that ‘Fancy,’ above any song that I’ve ever heard or dealt with, is a game-changer in that fact that we’re truly going to have to come to grips with the fact that hip-hop has spread its wings.”

Charli XCX has also said that she “does not understand” why some people cannot accept Azalea. “People give Iggy a hard time because she’s Australian and white and female and apparently that’s a weird thing, which I don’t get,” she told The Metro. “People also view me as an underdog so I think it’s cool that we came together and had this girl power moment and were Number One in the states for seven weeks. We really proved everyone wrong which I think was really cool.”

Iggy Azalea’s next single will be ‘Black Widow’, featuring Rita Ora.
