The Horrors, Black Lips, The Pigeon Detectives play Isle Of Wight Festival day three

SCUM, Simple Minds, The Rumble Strips also play

The Horrors, Black Lips and Simple Minds were among the acts who played day three of the Isle Of Wight Festival today (June 14).

Black Lips put on a comedic performance in the site’s Big Top tent, with bassist Jared Swilley coming onstage wearing a skimpy pair of white shorts, to a chorus of cheers and jeers from the assembled audience. The band told the crowd they’d been soaking up the sun for the past few days, calling the island “pretty”. Playing songs including ‘Drugs’ and ‘Katrina’, the four-piece’s guitarist Cole Alexander spent much of the show trying to catch his own spit while playing his instrument. Nevertheless, the band’s 10-song set went down well with the crowd. Leaving the stage, Alexander said the experience had “been real”.

Earlier in the day, Poppy & The Jezebels also played the Big Top, drawing a good crowd reaction from fans. The all-girl band dressed for the occasion too, with singer Poppy Twist coming onstage in a shiny silver dress. Twist used a Theremin to great effect during the gig, which saw the band play tracks including ‘UFO’.

Over on the Main Stage, The Pigeon Detectives had the crowd dancing as they played a singles-friendly set that included the likes of ‘This Is An Emergency’ and ‘I Found Out’. Frontman Matt Bowman told the audience that the bash marked the official start of his band’s summer, saying: “This is our first festival of the summer and I have to say, you’ve really kicked it off with a bang.”

S.C.U.M also played the Big Top tent, watched by the likes of Tim Burgess (who was curating today’s line-up) and members of The Horrors (the band’s Rhys Webb is the brother of S.C.U.M member Huw). Coming on to a stage covered in smoke, the band showcased tracks from their soon-to-be-released debut album including recent single ‘Visions Arise’.

The Horrors themselves took to the same stage a few hours later, playing much of new album ‘Primary Colours’. Recent singles ‘Who Can Say’ and ‘Sea Within A Sea’ went down a storm with the swelling crowd, and fans were forced to queue outside the tent to get a glimpse of the band. Although they said little during the performance, The Horrors looked relaxed throughout.

Newcomers The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart played an energetic set earlier on in the day. Before playing ‘Young Adult Fiction’, the band gave a shout-out to Burgess for inviting them on to the bill. Frontman Kip Burman said: “We wanna thank everyone for coming but most of all we wanna thank Tim Burgess for inviting us. It’s pretty sweet of him, so thanks Tim!”

Old-timers Simple Minds showcased tracks old and new during their Main Stage set. Kicking off their show with ‘Waterfront’, the band also included a cover version of ‘Gloria’ in the set. Speaking during a break between songs, Jim Kerr said it was “a real pleasure” for the Scots band to be at the bash, and praised the fact that the Isle Of Wight has had blanket sunshine almost all weekend.

Back in the Big Top, The Rumble Strips played tracks from both of their albums. Augmented by a second keyboard player, the brass-friendly band saw recently-written tracks like ‘Daniel’ go down a storm with the crowd, with many audience members singing along to the track word-for-word. However, it was debut single ‘Motorcycle’ that got the biggest cheer of the evening.
