J Cole says he felt “used” by Kanye West over phone chat

"That made me feel a certain type of way"

J Cole has spoken about how he feels like Kanye West “used” him by posting a screenshot of their recent phone call online.

Earlier this month (May 1), West took to Twitter to share a screengrab of a four-minute phone call he was engaged in with fellow rapper Cole. Kanye later deleted the tweet in question, but also posted screenshots of text conversations with John Legend, Charlamagne Tha God and others.

During a recent interview with Power 105.1’s Angie Martinez, Cole opened up about the incident, saying that he hadn’t been aware that West would share a photo of the conversation online and that Kanye later apologised to him about it.

“I would’ve never posted that or tell him to post that,” Cole said. “That made me feel a certain type of way. I told him that. He apologised, for the record. I told him that it felt like you just used my name in that very quick conversation for social media and to keep your thing going, whatever you were doing. It just felt like it wasn’t sincere because of that.”

West has caused controversy recently by praising Trumpcriticising Obamameeting with controversial right-wing pundit Candace Owens and calling slavery a “choice”.

Elaborating on what the pair had discussed, J Cole added: “When he called me he said- right off the rip- ‘Man, I need you to hold me accountable. Keep me in check. Say whatever you gotta say. I need that. I feed off that.'”

Describing himself as a “fan” of West’s, Cole went on to talk about his 2016 song ‘False Prophets’, which he confirmed has “one verse that applies” to Kanye.

Elsewhere in the interview, Cole revealed that there was once potential for a Kendrick Lamar collaboration album, but that it probably won’t happen now.

Asked if there would ever be a collaborative project with Pulitzer Prize-winning rapper Lamar, Cole said; “We just did a few songs. Like, we did a bunch of ideas. Put it like that. It was nothing like, you wouldn’t call it an album”.

“It’s not like it’s something that’s actively happening,” he continued. “Not because it’s never gonna happen. Just because, like… it’s not right now, and I don’t like teasing or playing the game ’cause this has been going on for a minute.”

Kanye is currently finishing work on his new album. Here’s everything we know about his record so far. He recently teased the album’s tracklist.
