Jack White hits out at people on phones during gigs: ‘People don’t clap any more’

Singer speaks out against people he claims don't give back as much energy as he puts into live shows

Jack White has criticised people at gigs who spend more time on their mobile phones than watching the artist perform.

White suggests that he is “wasting time” performing for people who “can’t even clap” because they have a phone in one hand and a drink in the other.

“People can’t clap any more, because they’ve got a fucking texting thing in their fucking hand, and probably a drink, too!” White tells Rolling Stone on the subject of the changing atmosphere at live shows. “Some musicians don’t care about this stuff, but I let the crowd tell me what to do. There’s no setlist. I’m not just saying the same things I said in Cleveland last night. If they can’t give me that energy back? Maybe I’m wasting my time.”

White previously revealed that Kanye West asked him to guest on his album ‘Yeezus’. The former White Stripes frontman reveals that the rapper sounded him out about a possible collaboration, but that he never followed up his initial interest.

White’s new album, ‘Lazaretto’, will be released on June 9. He will appear at London’s Eventim Apollo on July 5. This is White’s second scheduled appearance in the UK this summer, and will come after he plays Glastonbury festival in June.

The ‘Lazaretto’ tracklisting is:

‘Three Women’
‘Temporary Ground’
‘Would You Fight For My Love?’
‘High Ball Stepper’
‘Just One Drink’
‘Alone In My Home’
‘That Black Bat Licorice’
‘I Think I Found The Culprit’
‘Want And Able’
