Jaden Smith took his gold disc as his date to the Met Gala

After taking his own hair last year...

Jaden Smith continued his tradition of left-field date choices at the Met Gala last night (May 7).

Monday night saw the famed Met Gala take place at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. It saw Grimes and Elon Musk attending together and Nick Cave among the guests.

Having taken his sister Willow to the prestigious event in 2016 and his own dreadlocks the year after, this time round Jaden’s companion for the night was the gold disc he received after his single ‘Icon’ reached half a million sales and streams.

Smith (and the gold disc) posed for photos upon arrival on the red carpet. See below.

‘Icon’ was lifted from Smith’s 2017 album ‘Syre’.

In a three-star review, NME‘s Jamie Milton wrote of the album: “There is a genuine sense of generosity and wellbeing running through ‘Syre’. In fact, that’s virtually the only solid thread running through this seventeen-track juggernaut of an album.”

“Smith combines folk, metal, ‘70s rock, Christian pop and Detroit techno like someone flicking through Spotify on shuffle, hitting play for 30 seconds, and then moving on to something completely different. It’s exhausting.”

“To expect anything other than overblown big-sky thinking from Smith would be like asking Coldplay to stop being so sentimental. ‘Syre’ packs in genuine talent and the occasional eureka moment. And plenty of wild, frenetic, rambling masterpieces have been made in the past. The record isn’t weighed down by its ideas – it could just do with a filter, a producer with more sway”.
