James Brown‘s stunning V98 performance in the Evian Dance Tent at Chelmsford last night is the talk of the festival site today, with one member of the promoter’s organisation already proclaiming it “the performance of the weekend.”

The reception for the soul legend was nothing short of rapturous as he closed Saturday’s bill in the dance tent with a killer set of hits from his extensive back catalogue. James Brown took the stage nearly half an hour after his scheduled start time of 9.30pm but the crowd’s enthusiasm failed to wain during the wait, kindled by a warm-up set of funk from Brown’s ace band and backing singers.

Before the show, security had closed admission to the tented venue, admitting no more punters to the heaving capacity crowd. Due to the late start, promoters were forced to pull the plugs on the main PA as The James Brown Show over-ran and infringed curfew agreements on noise. But you can’t keep an old trouper down and the singer and band wound down their set by playing through the stage monitors and backline equipment.
