Jamie T played the largest headline gig of his career to date last night (November 14) as he started a two-night run at London’s Alexandra Palace.
The two London gigs are the culmination of a UK tour that has seen the singer-songwriter perform around Britain since the end of October. A sold out audience of over 10,000 people turned up to the London venue to see T’s first gig in his hometown since he headlined the tiny Tufnell Park Dome in August.
The set began with two of the more low-key moments from new album ‘Carry On The Grudge’, his first record in five years, with ‘Limits Lie’ and ‘Don’t You Find’. Backed by his band, T mixed the first half of the set between new album cuts including ‘Peter’, ‘Turn On The Light’ and ‘Rabbit Hole’ with older, well-received material such as ‘Ike & Tina’ and ‘Operation’. Jamie T also gave a nod to his roots as a live performer in London, dedicating ‘So Lonely Was The Ballad’ to the Peel venue in Kingston.
Later in the set Jamie T returned to his early career and performed a handful of songs (‘Back In The Game, ‘The Man’s Machine’) playing just his acoustic bass guitar while singer Hollie Cooke was invited on-stage to perform both ‘They Told Me It Rained’ and set closer ‘If You Got The Money’. A single stage invader was tackled to the ground after attempting to get onto the stage during the latter.
A four song encore began with Jamie T playing debut album track ‘Calm Down Dearest’ completely by himself, before being joined by the rest of his band for a riotous finish comprising of ‘Sheila’, ‘Sticks and Stones’ and final track ‘Sticks N’ Stones.’
