The rapper was inspired by the performance artist's 'The Artist Is Present' project for his 'Picasso Baby' music video
Performance artist Marina Abramovic has hit out at rapper Jay-Z following their collaboration for his ‘Picasso Baby’ music video in 2013.
The hip-hop star was inspired by Abramovic’s ‘The Artist Is Present’ project for the clip, which saw Abramovic herself appear. Abramovic’s original art piece saw her sat opposite members of the public in complete silence.
Speaking to Spike art magazine, the New York-based Serbian artist revealed that she was left feeling “completely used” by the team-up.
“I didn’t feel much,” Abramovic said. “There are hundreds of people adapting my work. I have young pop groups who adapt my work… I am very pissed by [‘Picasso Baby’], since [Jay Z] adapted my work only under one condition: that he would help my institute [the Marina Abramovic Institute]. Which he didn’t.”
She continued, “The day before, he came to my office and I gave him an entire power point presentation and said: ‘OK, you can help me, because I really need help to build [the institute]’. Then he just completely used me. And that wasn’t fair.”
“In the end it was only a one-way transaction. I will never do it again, that I can say. Never. I was really naive in this kind of world. It was really new to me, and I had no idea that this would happen. It’s so cruel, it’s incredible. I will stay away from it for sure.”
Abramovic later worked with Lady Gaga on a video promoting her album ‘Artpop’, with the artist now saying that Gaga was more reciprocative than Jay Z. “This is very different from Lady Gaga, for example, who has done great work for me. Just by having 45 million followers, she brought all these young kids into my public.”
However, Abramovic claims to not regret working with the rapper. “I don’t look at things this way. Right now in my life, things happen. I don’t bother anymore. My life hasn’t been easy. There are very few performers from my generation even being considered. I’m a survivor.”
