Jay Z, Beyoncé and Solange have released a statement after footage was posted online (May 12) which appeared to show Solange attacking the rapper in a lift.
The trio had refused to comment on the incident, until now. A statement given to Associated Press, issued on behalf of all of them, says “Jay and Solange each assume their share of responsibility for what has occurred”.
They describe it as an “unfortunate incident”.
It adds: “But the most important thing is that our family has worked through it. They both acknowledge their role in this private matter that has played out in the public. They both have apologised to each other and we have moved forward as a united family.”
“At the end of the day families have problems and we’re no different. We love each other and above all we are family. We’ve put this behind us and hope everyone else will do the same,” it concludes.
The altercation, between Solange and her brother-in-law Jay Z, took place at the Standard Hotel in New York at an after-party for the annual Met Gala on May 5.
The original TMZ report claimed a bodyguard can be seen hitting the emergency stop button as the elevator reaches the 12th floor. It further alleges Beyoncé was present throughout the attack.
Beyonce, Solange and Jay Z were later photographed walking out of the hotel together, but Jay Z reportedly went to a different car than the two sisters.
Jay Z and Beyonce, who will tour together later in 2014, married in 2008.
