Jessie J: ‘I’ve never heard of Mercury Prize-winner PJ Harvey’

Singer makes admission before private London gig

PJ Harvey is the talk of the music world after winning the Mercury Prize – for an unprecedented second time – with her album ‘Let England Shake’.

However, the veteran artist’s appeal is clearly not universal: Jessie J confesses to never having heard a note of Harvey’s music.

Speaking ahead of a private gig to promote video site Vevo, the 23-year-old singer told NME that not only had she not heard about the Mercury result, she wasn’t sure exactly what the Mercury was.

I didn’t see the ceremony, no, I was jet-lagged after a flight back from America so I had an early night. I live in a bubble. Could I be up for a Mercury next year? Possibly. I should probably find out what it is before then, ha ha.

When asked to comment on PJ Harvey’s win, the ‘Price Tag’ and ‘Do It Like A Dude’ star confessed that she’d never heard of her, but vowed to explore her back catalogue after the interview, asking, “Is she good then?”

However, Jessie J was keen to stress that her listening habits were not just limited to pop and R&B. She’s also a fan of guitar bands, and plans to cover Oasis’s ‘Don’t Look Back In Anger’ on tour later this year, promising to “keep it simple and stripped down”, without her trademark vocal embellishments.

“I love performing acoustically,” she explained. “I won’t change the song radically. I’ll be singing ‘Don’t Look Back In Anger’ the way it should be sung.”

Jessie J’s debut album ‘Who You Are’ is one of the biggest-selling releases of the year, shifting over 600,000 copies in the UK since its release in February.

However, the Essex singer’s rise to stardom has been plagued by misfortune. In June, she broke her foot while rehearsing for a gig at the Capital Radio Summertime Ball. She was forced to cancel a string of live dates, and now has to perform while sitting down on a now-familiar “gilded throne” in order to keep weight off her foot while it heals.
