The infamous Mark Chapman copy of 'Double Fantasy' is to be sold at an auction...

John Lennon completists have now got the chance to own the ultimate in ghoulish memorabilia.

The album that John Lennon signed for his murderer, Mark Chapman, is to be sold at an auction.

The copy of ‘Double Fantasy’, which specialist dealers Moments In Time are billing as ‘the most important piece of historic rock memorabilia ever’, was signed by John Lennon just five hours before Chapman shot him. It is being offered for £312,500 via

The album, which contains forensically enhanced fingerprints from Chapman, was found hidden behind a planter near the entrance to New York’s Dakota Apartment building. After being handed over to the police and proving instrumental in the case against Chapman, it was returned to the seller who has ‘wrestled for 18 years’ before coming to the decision to sell the album’.

Bob Zafian, agent for the seller, commented: “We are very excited to bring such a historically significant piece to the market. I have never come across a piece with such provenance; police reports, fingerprint documentation, letters from the District Attorney; it goes on and on.”
