NME.COM users have been paying tribute to the late Joy Division frontman Ian Curtis, who died 31 years ago today (May 18).

Fans have been paying their respects to the singer all day via the NME Facebook page, Facebook.com/nmemagazine.

NME.COM user Tom Wells wrote of the singer: “RIP Ian. An inspiration to many.”

Eamon Acton wrote of Curtis: “It speaks volumes that people who were born 12 years after his death still listen to his music and that every word still means something. That’s the sign of a truly great band.”

Paul Copeland also paid his respects, writing: “31 years ago, shocking. Had he been alive today I do believe he would have been one of Britain’s greatest literary forces. RIP Ian.
