Courtney Love backs Justin Bieber following Nirvana t-shirt backlash

Bieber receives barrage of abuse at American Music Awards

Courtney Love has backed Justin Bieber after he sported a Nirvana t-shirt during this year’s American Music Awards.

The singer received a barrage of abuse on Twitter after he wore a top featuring the band’s logo and a heart shaped box.

But Courtney Love jumped to the singer’s defence. She wrote:

Bieber played a three-song set at the Los Angeles ceremony with a medley of hits from new album ‘Purpose’, including ‘Sorry’ and ‘What Do U Mean’.

Taylor Swift and One Direction were the big winners on the night.

Swift picked up three awards despite not being at the ceremony. Her prizes included Song of the Year for ‘Blank Space’ and Favourite Pop/Rock album for ‘1989’ plus Favourite Adult Contemporary Artist. Rihanna also chose to stay away from the awards but was named Favourite Soul/R&B Female Artist.

Meanwhile, One Direction took home Artist of the Year for the second year in a row, and Favourite Group. The Weeknd also collected two prizes (Favourite Soul/R&B Male Artist and Favourite Soul/R&B Album for ‘Beauty Behind The Madness’). Jennifer Lopez hosted the ceremony, which was held at the Microsoft Theatre.

Nicki Minaj won Best Rap/Hip-Hop Artist and ‘The Pinkprint’ was named Best Rap/Hip-Hop Album. Ed Sheeran won Favourite Pop/Rock Male Artist, while Ariana Grande won Favourite Pop/Rock Female Artist.

Favourite Alternative Artist went to Fall Out Boy, and Jack Ü’s ‘Where Are U Now?’ featuring Justin Bieber was named Collaboration of the Year.
