Kaiser Chiefs‘ Ricky Wilson has spoken out in defence of Lily Allen, after she came under fire for comments she made about the refugee crisis and the ‘Calais jungle’.
The ‘Smile’ singer made headlines after travelling to the migrant camp in Calais, where she tearfully apologised ‘on behalf of the UK’ for the way in which child refugees had been treated. Critics later attacked Allen for her comments, when she defended the move by saying “it’s not about my life, it’s about the lives of children”.
Now, Kaiser Chiefs frontman Wilson has paid tribute to her honest and outspoken nature – hailing her as ‘one of the last real mavericks’.
“Lily is special and we should celebrate her,” Wilson told NME when asked about the controversy. “She’s one of the last real mavericks – not afraid to lose twitter followers over an opinion.
“She acts like she doesn’t give a fuck at the same time as caring for everybody, even the rotters. I don’t claim to know her very well, but am proud to know her and long may she reign.”
Meanwhile, Kaiser Chiefs are among the acts set to play an intimate charity gig at London’s Camden Assembly Rooms for Nordoff Robbins. The full list of shows is below. For tickets and more information, visit here.
