Kanye West’s ‘The Life of Pablo’ on course to be first streaming-only album to top US charts

The rapper’s latest album could make history if it scores a number one

Kanye West’s ‘The Life of Pablo’ is on course to become the first album to top the US charts from the number of its streams alone.

West’s latest album was released exclusively on streaming service TIDAL in February and has yet to have a physical release.

‘The Life of Pablo’ was made available to stream on Spotify and Apple Music in its entirety last week. According to Chart News, the album is predicted to accumulate 90 million streams, which translates to roughly 60,000 albums on the chart.

Since Billboard take streaming data into account for its albums chart, it’s possible that West could be the first artist to score a number 1 without having a record in the shops.

West’s main competitor for the top spot is country music artist Chris Stapleton, the two are currently neck and neck in terms of sales.

It is currently unclear whether ‘The Life of Pablo’ will receive a physical release. West has ruled out releasing any future music on compact disc, previously tweeting: “no more CDs from me”.

‘The Life of Pablo’ has also made an impact on the UK charts. Two album tracks ‘Father Stretch My Hands Pt 1’ and ‘Famous’ have entered this week’s Official Trending Chart Top 20.
