Kanye West auditions for ‘American Idol’

Rapper performs 'Gold Digger' for the show's judges

Following his live performance in front of President Obama at the Democratic National Committee fundraiser yesterday (October 10), Kanye West swung by the San Francisco leg of the latest round of American Idol auditions for a surprise tryout.

The rapper performed his hit single ‘Gold Digger’ in front of judges Jennifer Lopez, Keith Urban and Harry Connick Jr for what will be the last season of the long-running TV talent show. Though the episode won’t air until later this year, images of West’s appearance at the event have been posted to Instagram by Kim Kardashian and Idol host Ryan Seacrest, while Pitchfork have uncovered footage of his audition that appears to have been recorded on a camera phone from within the show’s control room. The Democratic National Committee fundraiser was hosted at the 2300 capacity Warfield venue with tickets selling for between £160-£6500. Offering advice to West on his supposed upcoming presidential bid, Obama joked that the rapper refers to the position of President as “Peezy” and added: “First of all, you got to spend a lot of time dealing with some strange characters who behave like they’re on a reality TV show,” a reference to the show Keeping Up with the Kardashians.

“Second important tip: Saying that you have a beautiful dark twisted fantasy? That’s what’s known as off-message in politics. You can’t say something like that. A lot of people have lost their congressional seats say things like that,” Obama continued. “And number three: Do you really think that this country is going to elect a black guy from the South Side of Chicago with a funny name to be president? That’s cray.”

West went on to play an 18-song set of greatest hits after Obama’s speech, including latest single ‘All Day’.
