The first couple made an appearance at the hot ticket event while making the rounds of the 10 inaugural balls on the night that Obama was sworn in as the 44th President Of The United States.
West performed several of his hits and told the crowd, made up mostly of people ages 18-35, that his mother Donda, who died in 2007, would be proud of his accomplishments on this historic day.
“My mama’d be so proud right now to see her baby boy performing the number one song in the country for our new African American president,” he said.
He also namechecked the new president in his lyrics, rapping: “From miles around they came to see him speak/The story that he told/To save a country that’s so blue that they thought had lost its soul/The American dream come true tonight”.
Fall Out Boy sarcastically dedicated the song, ‘Thanks For The Memories’, to former president George W Bush, reports the New York Times.
When the first couple arrived, Obama addressed the young audience, saying, “I’ve been looking forward to this ball for quite some time because, when you look at the history of this campaign, what started out as an improbable journey when nobody gave us a chance was carried forward, was inspired by, was energised by young people all across America,” he told the room, as supporters shouted, “Yes, we can!”
Kid Rock also performed a rousing set for the packed house, which reached capacity and had fire marshals turning people away.
