Tributes paid after the death of Karl Lagerfeld

"You were a true genius and will be missed, so much"

Fashion icon Karl Lagerfeld has died, at the age of 85.

Official confirmation of the passing of the German fashion icon, designer, artist and photographer – who worked as head designer and creative director of Chanel as well as Fendi and his own eponymous fashion label – came on social media earlier this evening (February 19).

The post read: “The House of KARL LAGERFELD shares, with deep emotion and sadness, the passing of its creative director, Karl Lagerfeld, on February 19, 2019, in Paris, France. He was one of the most influential and celebrated designers of the 21st century and an iconic, universal symbol of style.

“Driven by a phenomenal sense of creativity, Karl was passionate, powerful and intensely curious. He leaves behind an extraordinary legacy as one of the greatest designers of our time, and there are no words to express how much he will be missed.” You can see the post below:

Renowned for his trademark leather gloves, white ponytail, high starched collars and dark enigmatic glassees, he also designed outfits for a number of music and film stars, including Lady Gaga and Rihanna.

Closer reports that he died following a period of illness over the last two weeks.

Figures from the world of fashion, music and beyond have since spoken out to pay tribute to Lagerfeld, including Courtney Love, Florence Welch, Franz Ferdinand’s Alex Kapranos, and many more.

“You made me feel like a princess,” wrote Lily Allen. “I never quite understood what you saw in me but I am forever grateful for the support that you and Chanel have given me over the last 15 years. Rest In Peace Karl, you were a true genius and will be missed, so much.”

Actress and model Diane Kruger posted: “Karl…..I cannot tell you how much you meant to me and how much I will miss you. I will never forget your kindness towards me, your laughs, your imagination. I came to France to see you this week and introduce you to my daughter…I’m heartbroken I was too late. Rest In Peace, I adore you.”

Alexa Chung added: “Rest in peace, Karl. I remember being so scared to interview you and yet you were in fact incredibly witty and generous. Thank you for inviting me to some of the most glamorous experiences of my life, it was an honour to know you. Oh yeah and thanks for the dry shampoo tip, will always think of you as I powder my wig.”

Pharrell has also paid tribute with a post saying “the goat sleeps”. Kylie and Cat Power also released tributes. Kylie said: “I loved working with you. Unique, masterful, funny and generous. RIP.”

Cat Power wrote: “Dearest Karl, You swooped me off my feet and showed me love and friendship. I am heartbroken. i love you with all my heart” while Kylie added: ” You can see the latest tributes below:

After missing two of Chanel’s haute couture shows in Paris on January 22, the label said: “Mr Lagerfeld, artistic director of Chanel, who was feeling tired, asked Virginie Viard, director of the creative studio of the house, to represent him.”
