Katy Perry donates $5,000 to TLC’s Kickstarter campaign

R&B group hope to raise funds for the release of final album

Katy Perry has donated $5,000 (£3,292) to TLC’s Kickstarter campaign to fund their fifth and final album.

TLC’s T-Boz and Chilli took to Twitter to thank Perry this week, after her donation helped the R&B group towards meeting their fundraising goal of $150,000 (£98,766). “A BIG special THANK YOU 2 @katyperry for her pledge to our #kickstarter campaign,” T-Boz wrote. “Wow @katyperry… thanks so much for pledging,” Chilli added.

TLC launched their campaign earlier this week after requests for a new album from fans became “overwhelming”. Pledges for the album start at $5 (£3.31), and contributors have the chance to receive TLC’s music video outfits, an exercise class with Chilli, slumber parties, signed vinyl, movie dates, phone calls, outgoing voicemail messages and more. For her contribution, Katy Perry received the gift of a slumber party with T-Boz.

“I got on Twitter later than most. I already had fans asking, ‘When are you coming back? We need more music!'”, Chilli said in an interview. “Then once our biopic came out, the requests were just overwhelming. Fans have even been sending ideas for what they want a new album cover to look like — they get so creative. They have so much love for us, and we thought, ‘We gotta do this, and we have to involve the fans.'”

TLC have also sold 65 million records worldwide. The group’s TV movie CrazySexyCool: The TLC Story attracted 4.5 million viewers when it was aired on VH1 in 2013. In the same year, TLC released ‘Meant To Be’, a midtempo R&B track co-written by Ne-Yo, which was taken from their compilation album ’20’.
