Kendrick Lamar enjoys 510% jump in Twitter followers after ‘Control (HOF)’ controversy

It comes after Lamar pledged to 'murder' his rivals in his provocative verse on Big Sean collaboration 'Control (HOF)'

Kendrick Lamar is enjoying a surge in Twitter followers after his controversial verse on ‘Control (HOF)’ became a hot topic online.

The rapper caused a furore when ‘Control (HOF)’, a collaboration with Big Sean, premiered on August 12. After proclaiming himself, Jay-Z, Nas, Eminem and Andre 3000 as the greatest MCs of all time, Lamar then goes on to pledge to “murder” his current competitors in the verse.

He states: “I’m usually homeboys with the same niggas I’m rhyming with/ But this is hip-hop and them niggas should know what time it is/ And that goes for Jermaine Cole, Big KRIT, Wale, Pusha-T, Meek Mill, A$AP Rocky, Drake, Big Sean, Jay Electron’, Tyler, Mac Miller/ I got love for you all but I’m trying to murder you niggas”.

Lamar added over 208,000 new followers in the week after the track premiered, Billboard reports, and his rate of gaining them rose by a massive 510%. The ‘Control (HOF)’ controversy also helped the rapper gain 88,000 new Facebook fans and drove people to his Wikipedia page, where views were up 277% week-on-week.

Meanwhile, Lamar has recently been named the most hardworking act of the festival season. Having put together listings from hundreds of festivals over the world this summer, gig-tracking website Songkick found that the Compton rapper had played for the most time on festival stages this year, with Lamar performing for more than 46 hours or 2760 minutes in total.
