Kendrick Lamar and SZA are being sued over their music video for Black Panther soundtrack cut ‘All The Stars’.
The case follows a claim by British-Liberian artist Lina Iris Viktor, who accused Kendrick and SZA of stealing her artwork for ‘All The Stars’. According to the New York Times, artist Lina Iris Viktor was contacted by representatives from Marvel about the possibility of using her creations in November 2016 and December 2017, but she ultimately declined their offers on both occasions.
Now, as TMZ report, the case has gone to court. Viktor claims her “Constellations I,” “Constellations II” and “Constellations III” pieces are all present in the video, and calls the unauthorised use of her work “both an egregious violation of federal law and an affront to the artist, her livelihood, her legacy and to artists everywhere.”
As well as reportedly stealing the “unique look and feel” of her work, Viktor claims Kendrick and SZA lifted “stylized motifs of mythical animals, gilded geometric forms on a black background, and distinctively textured areas and patterns.”
She is suing for damages, and an injunction preventing Kendrick and SZA from using her artwork to promote the Black Panther soundtrack.
Lamar has executively produced the soundtrack album for the acclaimed Marvel Studios film, which has smashed box office records in its opening week.
