Extreme sports festival with Kula Shaker headlining bites the dust...

XS 99, the festival set to take place next weekend (July 30, August 1) at Castle Donnington with Kula Shaker, Republica and Dodgy, has been cancelled.

No reason has yet been given for the eleventh hour cancellation of the festival – the third of this year’s crop to be cancelled – though ticketholders should seek refunds from point of purchase.

Tim Westwood, Goldie and Andy Smith from Portishead were also booked to play DJ sets.

Meanwhile, it has emerged that the Brighton 99 Festival was cancelled when local officials from from Brighton And Hove Council withdrew the licence last week over health and safety fears.

They claim that the promoters did not have enough money in reserve to ensure the festival – which Finley Quaye, Run DMC, Groove Armada, Red Snapper and Younger Younger 28‘s had been due to play – would be able to ensure the safety of its punters after co-promoters Metropolis and Brighton club boss Chris Steward pulled out.

Although the consortium broke up two months ago, the council says it was only told a fortnight ago.

A council statement said: “There were concerns (from the emergency services) that a lack of money would mean substandard health and safety measures such as crowd control, stewarding and security – if anything had gone wrong it would have ruined the prospect of us ever staging a festival again.”

Anyone with a ticket can get a refund from the point of purchase.
