Alleged demo tape by Kurt Cobain’s pre-Nirvana band Fecal Matter streams online – listen

The recordings date back to 1986

A recording alleged to be a demo tape by Kurt Cobain‘s early band Fecal Matter has surfaced online.

Cobain’s pre-Nirvana group formed in 1985, with the grunge musician joined by drummer Greg Hokanson and future Melvins drummer Dale Crover on bass.

This 13-track demo, titled ‘Illiteracy Will Prevail’, is reported to have been recorded during Easter 1986 in Burien, Washington State.

The recording is 58 minutes long and includes an early version of ‘Downer’, which later featured on Nirvana debut ‘Bleach’. Nirvana would also later re-record the track ‘Spank Thru’.

The demo tape is the latest in a series of rare Nirvana-related recordings surfacing online in recent times. An early version of ‘Sappy‘ leaked online earlier this week.
