Courtney Love says ‘Montage Of Heck’ director found her sex tape with Kurt whilst making new film

Hole singer revealed the news at the Tribeca Film Festival over the weekend (April 17)

Courtney Love discussed new Kurt Cobain documentary Cobain: Montage of Heck at the Tribeca Film Festival over the weekend (April 17), talking about the “guilt” she felt over the late Nirvana frontman’s death and revealing that the film’s director Brett Morgen discovered a sex tape shot by the pair.

Cobain: Montage of Heck premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January but arrived in UK cinemas this spring. It will receive its US television premiere on HBO on May 4.

As reported by Billboard, when asked about what she felt when she first watched the movie, Love replied “guilt”, adding that it made her wonder what she “could have done” to prevent his suicide. The Hole singer also added that the film meant she “got to spend more time with Kurt and [daughter] Frances”.

Love also added that director Morgen, who was also speaking at the event, had access to masses of archival material and home footage for the project. “Somehow Brett found the sex tape,” she said. “Everyone makes one sex tape once in their lives.” Morgen added that it was “completely courageous” of Love to provide such intimate material.

Meanwhile, Frances Bean Cobain, who served as executive producer on the film, recently commented on the legacy of her father ahead of its release.

Speaking to Rolling Stone, the 22-year-old visual artist described her father’s influence and status in popular culture as being “inescapable” and said that he’s been placed “on a pedestal”.

“I was around 15 when I realised he was inescapable,” Cobain said. “Even if I was in a car and had the radio on, there’s my dad.”

She continued: “He’s larger than life and our culture is obsessed with dead musicians. We love to put them on a pedestal. If Kurt had just been another guy who abandoned his family in the most awful way possible… But he wasn’t.”

“He inspired people to put him on a pedestal, to become St. Kurt. He became even bigger after he died than he was when he was alive. You don’t think it could have gotten any bigger. But it did.”
