KYLIE MINOGUE is on course to sell at least 250,000 copies of ‘CAN’T GET YOU OUT OF MY HEAD’ by Sunday (September 23), scoring the third highest first week sales of the year after HEAR’SAY and SHAGGY and destroying VICTORIA BECKHAM in their much vaunted chart battle.
In final midweek figures collated up until yesterday morning (September 20), Kylie had sold a little shy of 150,000 – more than seven times as many as Posh Spice with her solo debut proper ‘Not Such An Innocent Girl’. Chart expert Gennaro Castaldo of HMV told NME.COM: “We knew Kylie‘s single was going to do really well, but sales are surpassing all expectations. She’s, obviously, connecting with the public in a very big way.”
He added: “She’s also looking a good bet to top the charts next week as well, which means she would be at Number One when her new album, ‘Fever’, is released on October 1.”
Kylie‘s nearest new release rival Alien Ant Farm are currently sitting at Number Three with just under 31,000 sales of their cover of Michael Jackson‘s ‘Smooth Criminal’. Posh is back at Five, one behind Bob The Builder. However, the Spice Girl could slide even further as Shaggy‘s ‘Luv Me Luv Me’ is nipping at her heals, currently on 17,346, just over 1,000 sales behind. This week’s NME cover stars Starsailor are at Ten having sold 12,149 copies of ‘Alcoholic’.
In the albums chart, Spiritualized are wrestling for the top spot with Macy Gray. Spiritualized’s ‘Let It Come Down’ has sold 14,804 and sits at Number Two at present, just below Gray, who has so far sold 15,980 of second album ‘The Id’. Samantha Mumba’s comeback album ‘Gotta Tell You’ is not setting the charts on fire and is sitting at 12 with sales of 5,825, while current US album chart-topper Jay Z is finding it impossible to repeat the Stateside success of ‘The Blueprint’. He has a midweek of 23, having sold just 3,445 copies.
