Lady Gaga ‘makes love’ to crowd and debuts seven new ‘ARTPOP’ songs at London gig

Singer makes emotional return to the stage with intimate gig at London's Roundhouse

Lady Gaga unveiled seven new songs from her forthcoming album ‘ARTPOP’ at her London comeback gig tonight (September 1).

The singer opened this year’s iTunes Festival with a typically theatrical performance which featured some kind of costume or wig change for every song and several lengthy explanations about the inspiration for her new material.

Emerging from the centre of London’s Roundhouse venue clad in black, the singer launched into opening number ‘Aura’ before stripping down to her underwear for rock-flavoured second song ‘MANiCURE’, during which several jets of ticker tape were fired into the crowd.

She then put on a huge dirty blonde wig and told the crowd they would be “making love in this space tonight” before performing the title track from her ‘ARTPOP’ album, which contained the teasing line: “My ARTPOP could mean anything.”

Lady Gaga then explained that she wanted to “set herself free from the box of pop music” before playing a song called ‘Jewels & Drugs’ which had a pronounced hip-hop influence and guest raps from Twista and Too $hort, who joined her on stage, as well as TI, who didn’t appear, Gaga said, because he had been denied access to the UK.

After exiting the stage for several minutes, Gaga returned to sing a catchy pop-rock track called ‘Sex Dreams’, which was followed by an emotional monologue in which the singer told the crowd she wanted to show them “the human beneath the wigs”. The track that came next, ‘Swine’, began with stripped down verses before exploding into pounding EDM choruses during which the stage was filled with backing dancers dressed to look like pigs in boiler suits. Some of the snout-faced dancers even began bouncing on bungee ropes during the memorable routine.

Lady Gaga ended her main set with stripped down ballad dedicated to her fans called ‘I Wanna Be With You’, which drew a loud cheer for the self-referencing line: “I don’t care what they say / Because I was born this way.” The singer then exited the stage before returning for an encore featuring a high-octane rendition of current single ‘Applause’.

Lady Gaga will release new album ‘ARTPOP’ on November 11. This year’s iTunes Festival continues with gigs at London’s Roundhouse every night this month (September) and headliners including Arctic Monkeys, Pixies, Haim, Katy Perry and Justin Timberlake.
