'Born This Way' singer triumphs over Kanye and Gerard

Lady Gaga has been voted Hero Of The Year at the Shockwaves NME Awards 2011.

The result was announced at the ceremony at London‘s O2 Academy Brixton tonight (February 23).

Gaga had been up against other nominees Kanye West, My Chemical Romance‘s Gerard Way and WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange in the NME.COM vote.

Last year Rage Against The Machine won the award on account of their anti-X Factor Christmas Number One campaign.

The NME Awards Big Gig takes place on Friday (25). Godlike Genius Dave Grohl‘s band Foo Fighters headline, with Cee Lo Green, Band Of Horses and No Age also on the bill.
