Lianne La Havas quits drinking ahead of Mercury Music Prize

Singer is nominated for debut 'Is Your Love Big Enough?'

Lianne La Havas has revealed that she will not be enjoying a celebratory drink at the Barclaycard Mercury Prize this evening after quitting drinking earlier this year.

Daily Star that a health scare earlier this year made her re-think her lifestyle and led to completely quitting both drink and cigarettes.

Chatting to the paper about her newfound sobriety, La Havas said: “I did originally say I’d have a drink if I won the prize, but I don’t really mind now. I’m going to have a good time anyway.”

She added: “I feared for my life when I got sick as I haven’t been in hospital since I was a child. But I’ve never felt better than when I came out of hospital and my lifestyle has changed now. My voice is much stronger as I’ve quit smoking as well.”

Lianne La Havas faces stiff competition for the Barclaycard Mercury Prize this year with bookies’ favourites Alt-J leading the list of contenders. Plan B, The Maccabees, Jessie Ware and Ben Howard are all also nominated on the list of twelve.
