Lightspeed Champion covers The Strokes in New York

Dev Hynes' acoustic stint sells out Mercury Lounge

Lightspeed Champion packed New York’s Mercury Lounge to the gills last night, with an acoustic show.

Hynes was joined by former Hope Of The States man Mike Sidell on violin playing a 10-song set including a cover of The Strokes’ ‘Heart In A Cage’.

‘I was trying to think of a joke all day to break the ice that would inevitable be in the air but it’s alright’ Hynes told the enraptured audience.

‘I have a really bad punchline though, maybe I’ll use it later so be prepared for that moment’ he joked.

‘I felt like I was getting crack mouth then, you know when you get foam at the sides? It’d be okay if I was on crack but I’m not, so it just looks dirty. This next song was written for my mother, not I feel bad for talking about crack’ he confessed to the crowd before playing ‘No Surprise’.

Hynes took great lengths to explain to the crowd that his Strokes’ cover is their ‘go to’ song in the set to grasp the audiences’ attention, saying ‘We don’t usually write it on the setlist but tonight I did, predicting the downfall of the last two songs’.

After the show, Hynes headed around the corner to nearby Cake Shop to watch friends Alex Turner and Miles Kane perform their second show ever as The Last Shadow Puppets.

Lightspeed Champion played:

‘Happy Fucking Birthday’

‘Galaxy Of The Lost’

‘No Surprise’

‘Heart In A Cage’

‘Everyone Is Listening To Crunk’

‘Madame Van Damme’

‘Dry Lips’

‘Tell Me What It’s Worth’

‘Midnight Surprise’
