Lily Allen marks musical return on John Lewis Christmas advert – watch

Singer performs her version of 'Somewhere Only We Know'

This year’s John Lewis Christmas TV advert, soundtracked by Lily Allen covering Keane’s ‘Somewhere Only We Know’, has been revealed. Scroll up to watch the ad now.

The animated advert marks Allen’s return to the music world for the first time since she released her second album ‘It’s Not Me, It’s You’ in 2009. The Keane cover precedes the release of a new album from Allen in 2014 and is likely to be a contender for the Christmas Number One spot over the festive period.

The John Lewis advert is an animated clip titled ‘The Bear And The Hare’ and comes part of a reported £7m advertising push over Christmas. John Lewis has employed similar music syncs in the past few years with Ellie Goulding covering Elton John’s ‘Your Song’ in 2010 and Frankie Goes To Hollywood’s ‘The Power Of Love’ being performed by Gabrielle Aplin in 2012.

Earlier this year Lily Allen revealed that her new album has some “feminist vibes coming on”. Speaking in September, Allen discussed the progress of the album and what fans can expect. “It’s not an earnest ‘I’m a mum’ kind of record,” she said. “It’s empowering. There’s some feminist vibes going on. It’s the same old me with a bit of swearing going on. Good choruses, key changes here and there – that’s it!”

Allen also said she was nervous about returning to the spotlight after her long absence from the music industry, stating: “I’m really nervous because I haven’t been on stage for a really long time. I’m actually really scared. The music thing is great – creating is what I do. But being catapulted back into the limelight is something I’m anxious about, mainly because I’ve got two children now. It’s not just me – I’ve got family to think about.”

Previously, Allen had claimed that the album was “shaping up pretty well” and said it will feature songs “about babies and nappies”. The singer gave birth to her second child, Marnie, on January 8 this year. She made her chart comeback last month (July) with a “featuring” appearance on Pink’s latest single ‘True Love’, which has peaked at Number 16 on the UK’s Official Singles Chart. Allen also makes a cameo in the track’s video, which you can click to watch below.
