Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl was among the guests at a concert honouring Lionel Richie in Los Angeles over the weekend.
Richie was honoured at this year’s MusiCares Person of the Year event, with Rihanna, Pharrell Williams, Stevie Wonder and Florence Welch among the live performers.
Grohl covered ‘You Are’ and explained how he knew Richie. “I know what you’re thinking, how the hell does Dave Grohl know Lionel Richie? When I got out of surgery [after broken leg last year] I was in my hospital room and started getting flowers and get-well cards,” he recalled.
“One day my wife comes into the room and says, ‘Wait till you see the muffin basket that just showed up.’ This was the biggest muffin basket I’ve ever seen, it was like 500 muffins. But I didn’t know who it was from. A few days later, I got a text from my tour manager saying ‘Lionel Richie called and wanted to know if you got that muffin basket?’ Lionel, tonight, I didn’t bring you a muffin basket, I brought you this.”

Rihanna performed Richie’s 1986 hit ‘Say You Say Me’, while Stevie Wonder covered ‘Three Times A Lady’.
