Almost ten thousand are already in church awaiting the funeral of LISA ‘LEFT-EYE’ LOPES.
Lopes’ funeral takes place today (May 2) at the massive New Birth Missionary Baptist Church in Lithonia, a suburb of Atlanta.
The service has been delayed by an hour, and will now commence at midday local time.
A white hearse carrying the casket with the remains of the TLC star arrived at the church around 10am local time. The star’s coffin is white, with a gold inscription of a passage from their hit, ‘Waterfalls’.
A massive traffic jam is blocking some roads for up to a quarter of a mile as friends, family and fans descend on the church, the inside of which is decorated with hundreds of candles and flowers. TLC songs are currently playing in the vicinity.
The first fans arrived not long after dawn, many are students who have taken the day off school. One mourner, Shara London, told the local Atlanta Journal Constitution newspaper: “We just wanted to pay our respects to her. She was a loving person and everybody related to her songs.”
Student Katrina Patterson added: “We always wanted to meet her. It’s just so horrible we have to meet her at her funeral.”
Security at the service tight, with mourners being searched by local police and security guards. Cameras and recording equipment are banned. Last night, some of the streets near to the church were closed to stop fans camping outside.
The newspaper also claims that rappers P. Diddy and Usher and stadium diva Whitney Houston are set to pay their respects. The legendary boss of Death Row records, Suge Knight, is already in church.
The TLC singer died in a car crash in the north of the Honduras last month (April 25).
