R&B singer LISA ‘LEFT EYE’ LOPES has been killed in a car crash in HONDURAS.
The 30-year-old member of the trio TLC was on holiday when the accident happened on Thursday (April 25).
Lopes, who was reportedly with seven other occupants in the car but was the only fatality in the accident, had recently completed recording of TLC‘s fourth album. She was also establishing herself as a solo artist under the name NINA, which stood for New Identity Non-Applicable, and had signed to Suge Knight’s Tha Row label.
Arista Records president L A Reid, who helped to launch TLC, paid tribute to Lopes.
He said: “No words can possibly express the sorrow and sadness I feel for this most devastating loss. Lisa was not only a gifted and talented musical inspiration, but more importantly, she was like a daughter to me. My thoughts and prayers are with Lisa’s family and friends. Her legacy will be remembered forever.”
With fellow TLC members Tionne ‘T-Boz’ Watkins and Rozonda ‘Chilli’ Thomas, Lopes was best known for the international hit singles ‘Waterfall’ and ‘No Scrubs’. She also hit the UK Number One spot with Spice Girls Mel C on ‘Never Gonna Be The Same Again’.
The two remaining members of the group have issued a statement, that reads: “We had all grown up together and were as close as a family. Today we have truly lost our sister.”
Funeral arrangements are currenlty unconfirmed, but a service is expected to take place in Atlanta.
