She's since apologised for the gaffe.
Lorde has apologised after she inadvertently caused offence by captioning a photo of a bathtub with a Whitney Houston quote.
The Melodrama singer, 21, shared a photo of a filled bath on Instagram with the caption “And iiii will always love you,” referencing Houston’s 1992 song.
But the post soon attracted backlash from fans who accused the singer of insensitivity, after Houston accidentally drowned in a hotel bathtub in 2012.
“Whitney was a legend. she was amazing. she was a queen. she was a strong black woman. I like lorde but this is truly disgusting”, one fan wrote.
Another said: “C’mon Lorde out of all the lyrics to use for your bathtime u use Whitney lyrics…. Like for why??”.
The singer has now apologised for the apparent gaffe, and earnestly admitted that she hadn’t considered the implications of the caption.
“Extremely extremely poorly chosen quote,” the “Green Light” singer wrote in a subsequent Instagram story.
“I’m so sorry for offending anyone—I hadn’t even put this together I was just excited to take a bath.”
She added in a second post: “IT IS NOT MY FKN DAY TODAY”.
Lorde is currently touring the US – and recently collaborated with Jack Antonoff on a live cover of St Vincent’s ‘New York’ during a gig at the city’s Barclays Center.
