A play and 13 songs will be premiered at Brooklyn Academy Of Music...
LOU REED will unveil his newest work, a play and song cycle based on the writings of EDGAR ALLAN POE, at a New York theatre tomorrow (November 27).
The former Velvet Underground mainman has collaborated with avant-garde theatre director Robert Wilson on ‘POEtry’, creating a play and 13 songs. It will open at Brooklyn Academy Of Music and run until December 8.
“I realised that when I was younger, I had really missed out on Poe – the subtleties, the nuances, the psychology,” Lou Reed said yesterday. “You can’t just say he was macabre and had a sense of dread. He was interested in psychology – why you do things. It’s very easy for any contemporary person to relate to Poe and the psychological things that he’s interested in.”
Associated Press reports that ‘POEtry’ was inspired by works such as ‘The Tell-Tale Heart’ and ‘The Fall Of The House Of Usher’.
“For the truly obsessive, they can get the original Poe,” Reed added. “I amplify it. I think it’s more understandable.”
