A pair of Mac DeMarco‘s trainers – described by the Canadian singer-songwriter as being both “old” and “stinky” – fetched £13,800 in an online auction.
DeMarco sold the Vans sneakers via his own eBay page. The listing ended yesterday (January 4) with a winning bid of US $21,100.
The proceeds from the sale will go to the Willie Mae Rock Camp for Girls.
In the listing, he wrote: “I’m selling an old pair of my shoes. I’ve John Hancocked [autographed] the left shoe. Will anyone buy an old stinky pair of shoes? I don’t know. lets wait and see. I’ll probably throw some other crap in the box before shipping it, I dunno what.”
He added: “If you’re one of those kids who tried to take them off my feet while I was crowd surfing at some point this year, nice try jackass. But hey, here’s another opportunity for you to have them.”
DeMarco was in the news last month after being arrested by police following a live performance at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB). The 24-year-old climbed to the venue’s ceiling beams and was detained upon returning to the stage. According to UCSB police Lt Mark Signa, officers didn’t realise they had arrested the star of the show until they spoke to DeMarco outside the venue.
