Madonna jokes that she helped to write Lady Gaga’s ‘Born This Way’

Madonna makes fun of the similarities between 'Express Yourself' and 'Born This Way'

Madonna has aimed another jibe at Lady Gaga over the similarities between ‘Express Yourself’ and ‘Born This Way’.

Earlier this year, Madonna called Gaga’s song “reductive” and claimed that “it felt familiar” when she first heard it. Now, in a new interview with a Brazilian TV show, she has made a joke about the track’s songwriting credits. “I’m a really big fan of [‘Born This Way’]. I’m glad that I helped Gaga write it,” she said.

Madonna has also mocked the similarity between the two songs on her current tour, in which she performs a mash-up of ‘Express Yourself’ and ‘Born This Way’ followed by a pointed snippet of a track called ‘She’s Not Me’.

However, Lady Gaga has found the comparisons less amusing. When NME asked her about the similarity last year, she replied: “I will look you in your eyes and tell you that I am not dumb enough or moronic enough to think that you are dumb enough or moronic enough not to see that I would have stolen a melody. If you put the songs next to each other, side by side, the only similarities are the chord progression.”

Madonna’s ‘MDNA’ tour recently completed its three-date UK leg, taking in shows at London’s Hyde Park on July 17, Birmingham’s National Indoor Arena on July 19 and Edinburgh’s Murrayfield Stadium on July 21. During the Edinburgh gig, the singer defied warnings from local police not to brandish a machine gun onstage following last week’s tragic shootings in Colorado.
