Madonna brings ‘MDNA’ tour to London

Monks, machine guns and her 11-year-old son feature in the star's Hyde Park spectacular

Madonna brought her MDNA Tour to the UK last night (July 17) with a spectacular show at London’s Hyde Park.

The pop megastar brought machine guns, a marching band, monks and her son Rocco to the stage for the first UK date on her current world tour. She was watched by stars including Kylie Minogue, George Michael and Stella McCartney.

After support from Avicii and LMFAO, Madonna arrived onstage after an elaborate opening sequence involving chanting monks and a giant golden swinging urn. Arriving tooled up with a machine gun, she powered into recent single ‘Girl Gone Wild’.

The show continued in high energy fashion, with an elaborate setpiece for ‘Gang Bang’ involving a hotel room and more firearms, before performing ‘Hung Up’ in a gymnastic sequence while bound up in chains.

A costume change saw the show take on a majorette theme for ‘Give Me All Your Luvin”, which saw a floating marching band descend, hanging from wires. Before that, ‘Express Yourself’ was mixed with Lady Gaga‘s ‘Born This Way’, in a sly dig to the latter song’s similarity to the 1989 classic.

After ‘Turn Up The Radio’, Madonna’s army of dancers was joined by her 11-year-old son Rocco Ritchie.

Madonna then segued ‘Open Your Heart’ with the track ‘Saggara Jo’ by Basque group Kalakan, which she explained meant “smashing discrimination, making judgement or any form of hatred, pain or chaos that we surround ourselves with, or find ourselves surrounded with”.

She urged the crowd not to “take anybody’s shit” based on their religion or sexual preference, saying, “the next time somebody tries to stop you from doing what you believe in, from being who you are or from being what you are, just say to them, ‘Sagara Jo motherfucker!'”

A triumphant ‘Vogue’ saw the show approach its final act with a medley of ‘Erotica’ and ‘Candy Store’ and a waltz version of ‘Like A Virgin’. Then followed the infamous, politically charged video mash-up that attracted the ire of right-wing French leader Marine Le Pen. It mixed up references to Guantanamo Bay and the recent spate of gay teen suicides in the US.

After a euphoric ‘Like A Prayer’, the show closed with a raved-up version of ‘Celebration’.
