Madonna wins Malawi baby adoption appeal

Singer can take home another African child

Madonna has won her appeal to adopt a second Malawi child.

The singer failed in her initial bid to adopt four year-old Chifundo ‘Mercy’ James in April, although the Malawi high court has since accepted her appeal based on her previous commitment to helping disadvantaged children, reports BBC News.

Malawi’s chief justice, Lovemore Munlo, yesterday (June 11) noted the commitment and the fact that Madonna was financially stable, saying, “We therefore grant the adoption.”

The singer had lost her initial bid because she had not spent at least 18 months living in Malawi – as the rules of adoption require.

Madonna was not present in Malawi for the appeal hearing.
