The star's publicist says Carey is taking it "one day at a time"...

MARIAH CAREY has not attempted suicide but has suffered a “complete emotional and physical breakdown”, NME.COM can reveal.

A US publicist for the star told NME.COM this afternoon (August 1) there was “absolutely no truth to” a report in The Sun newspaper this morning claiming Carey‘s hospitalisation last week was the result of a suicide attempt brought about by depression over the end of a relationship.

However, the publicist did concede that Carey had suffered a complete “emotional and physical breakdown”. She would not be drawn on whether or not this constituted a nervous breakdown.

The publicist also denied Carey had intentionally cut herself saying that she “broke dishes and plates” and “may have” suffered cuts to the feet, but not intentionally.

No possible discharge date for Carey has been set. She will remain in a secret hospital and take “one day at a time and all public appearances have been put on hold,” her publicist added. “We need to embrace Mariah now, and after she takes the time she needs she’ll be back stronger than ever.”

The publicist refused to disclose whether or not those in Carey‘s immediate camp saw signs that the breakdown was approaching.

Carey‘s new film and album, both called ‘Glitter’, are due for release within weeks.
