New Marilyn Manson song to soundtrack TV series Salem

'Cupid Carries A Gun' will be used on the WGN America show

Marilyn Manson has contributed a new song, entitled ‘Cupid Carries A Gun’, to the soundtrack of drama series Salem. The track will be used during the title sequence of the show and will appear from the second episode of the series, which airs on April 27.

Speaking about the track, which was co-written alongside show composer Tyler Bates, Manson said the following: “The occult and witchcraft is so often used in cinema with a heinous disregard for even researching its origins. I liked the themes of Salem. It looks at the witch trials without being cliché like most modern films.” Bates also opened up about the writing of the track, which had previously existed in draft form, stating, “I saw the title sequence and the song immediately came to mind. I showed it to Manson for fun more than anything, and it inspired us to finish the song that night.”

This is the first series of the show, which stars Janet Montgomery and Shane West and focuses on the real life 17th century Salem witch trials. This is also the first time that Marilyn Manson has consented for a track to be used on a TV show.

‘Cupid Carries A Gun’ is also the first track to be unveiled from the metal star’s forthcoming LP which, speaking earlier this year, Manson stated was shaping up to be a “very cinematic” record.

Elaborating on the direction of the release, which will be the singer’s tenth album and his first since 2012’s ‘Born Villain’, Manson also said that the record “isn’t about being pissed about the world”. “The redneck in me comes out in my voice, and its got some old blues mixed with the very hard elements,” he said. “I want to retain what I think is good about the past, what music I did and who I am. It’s not about being pissed about the world – it’s about realising someone has to fuck things up.”

Manson is set to headline this year’s Alt-Fest. The appearance will be Manson’s only UK festival appearance in 2014. The new hard rock, industrial and metal event will take place from August 15-17, 2014, at Boughton Estate in Kettering, Northamptonshire. Of Manson’s appearance, festival organiser Dominic Void has said: “We are ecstatic to have booked Marilyn Manson to headline for our first year; this means a lot to us and particularly our fans.”

Also playing Alt-Fest are Arch Enemy, Breed77, Cradle of Filth, Covenant, Fearless Vampire Killers, Fields of the Nephilim, Killing Joke, My Ruin and Peter Hook & The Light. For more information visit alt-fest.com
