Marina and the Diamonds: ‘My new album is an ode to dysfunctional love’

'Electra Heart' is due out on April 30 and will be supported by a UK tour in May

Marina And The Diamonds‘ Marina Diamandis has said that her forthcoming album, ‘Electra Heart’, is “an ode to dysfunctional love”.

The singer says the follow up to 2010’s ‘The Family Jewels’ was inspired by a break-up, but with a twist, adding that it wasn’t about creating a victim mentality.

“I wanted to create a cold, ruthless character who wasn’t vulnerable,” she stated. In the interview with The Daily Mail, Diamandis explained that she didn’t want come across as a ‘victim’ of a relationship breakdown on the record. “On my new songs, I wanted to flick the situation around,” she said. “I didn’t want to come across as a victim. I’m not a bitch, but I wanted to expose that side of my character.” She added: “I wanted to address the things that women don’t usually talk about. Nobody will admit to playing power games in relationships, but they do.”

‘Electra Heart’ is due out on April 30, with a single ‘Primadonna’ set to precede it on April 16. When speaking about ‘The Family Jewels’, Diamandis admitted that it hadn’t been as successful as she had hoped. “My first album wasn’t a flop, but it wasn’t a wild success. This one is more assured, and I feel it will come to define my career. I’ve always been honest about my ambitions. There’s no shame in that. You need a certain level of narcissism to do this job.”

The new LP contains 12 tracks in all. The single ‘Radioactive’ – the video for which you can watch below – however, will not feature on the album. Producers who have worked on the record include Diplo (Rolo Tomassi/MIA), Stargate (Rihanna/Chris Brown) and Guys Sigsworth (Bjork/Frou Frou).

Marina And The Diamonds will embark on a UK tour in May in support of the album, playing eight shows across the UK. The gigs begin at Manchester Cathedral on May 4 and run until May 15, when they headline Cardiff Coal Exchange.
