Album featuring Tame Impala's Kevin Parker and Stevie Wonder is out January 19
Mark Ronson] is streaming his upcoming album ‘Uptown Special’ online ahead of its release.
The LP, which features contributions from Tame Impala’s Kevin Parker, rapper Mystikal, Stevie Wonder and novelist Michael Chabon, is due for release January 19 via Columbia Records.
‘Uptown Special’ has been inspired by the New York hip-hop scene of the ’90s and was written and produced with Jeff Bhasker (Kanye West, Drake, Alicia Keys) over 18 months in London, Memphis, LA and New York City. It is Ronson’s fourth studio album and his first release since 2010’s ‘Record Collection’.
The album’s first single, ‘Uptown Funk’, featuring Bruno Mars, has just enjoyed a fourth non-consecutive week at Number One and broke its own record for the most amount of times any one single has been streamed in a week, amassing a total of 2.56 million streams.
Speaking to the Guardian, where you can listen to the album in its entirety, Ronson said the single came out of a jam at Bruno Mars’ studio in LA. “He was on drums, Jeff on synths, me on bass. We got the basic groove and, with Phil Smeeze joining in, we wrote the lyrics to the first verse. Six months later we finished the song in Toronto. Bruno’s a good drummer,” he said.
Ronson also said getting Stevie Wonder to feature on opening track ‘Uptown’s First Finale’ was “one of the most emotional experiences” he’s ever had. “[The song] was inspired by the first set of lyrics that Michael sent me. And although I loved the lyrics, for some reason I kept hearing the melody as if it were being played by Stevie Wonder with his signature harmonica tone,” Ronson said.
