A ‘homecoming’ festival gig for Maximo Park last night (May 28) marked the end of a week of gigs around the city as part of Newcastle-Gateshead‘s Evolution festival.
Headlining the Freevolution event, the band tore through a crowd-pleasing Bank Holiday set packed full of choice cuts from both albums, including ‘Our Velocity’, ‘Graffiti’, ‘Apply Some Pressure’ and new single ‘Books From Boxes’ .
Frontman Paul Smith‘s usual enthusiasm was matched by keyboardist Lukas Wooler, who spent most of the set dancing wildly, and one young woman who mounted a successful stage invasion to dance and throw herself at Smith‘s feet.
Running across two stages on either side of Newcastle-Gateshead‘s quayside, Freevolution also boasted sets from the likes of Hot Club De Paris, Calvin Harris, Brazilian funk outfit Bonde Do Role and Norwegian electro-rockers Datarock.
Highlights of the week-long series of indoor gigs included ex-Delgados frontwoman Emma Pollock, punk legend Patti Smith and bluesman Seasick Steve.
