MEL C‘s planned on-pitch performance prior to ENGLAND‘s final EURO 2000 game last night (June 20) was pulled at the last minute amid fears over her safety.

Sporty Spice had been due to play new solo single ‘I Turn To You’ at the stadium in Chareloi before the crunch game against Romania. According to The Sun newspaper, football’s governing body UEFA decided that because security staff would have been so busy checking fans coming into the ground, they couldn’t also cope with Mel and her band. The paper quotes UEFA describing the security measures in place at the group as “organised chaos”. Security had been stepped up a level following the weekend riots involving some England supporters.

Mel C, a huge football fan, instead watched the match on television away from the ground.

England lost the decider 3-2, and are now out of the competition. Mel‘s new single will be released through Virgin on July 24.
