Florida goth-rockers set to play NME gig at Brighton's The Great Escape Festival
Merchandise are set to play their first ever UK gig on an NME stage at this years’ Great Escape Festival in Brighton.
The Florida rockers will play at the festival, which takes in Brighton between May 16-18 and sees over 250 bands descend on over 30 venues across the city. Speaking in this week’s NME, which is on newsstands from today (February 13) or available digitally, singer Carson Cox says the only reason Merchandise have been so shy about coming to the UK now is because of the cost. “It’s like, really expensive to come over,” he says. “But we’re, like, total Anglophiles. I get all my news from the BBC – seriously! If you grew up in any kind of countercultural way in the US you always get your news from outside the US because it’s so skewed here.”
Merchandise are set to release a new album ‘Totale Night’ in March. It is the follow-up to their 2012 release ‘Children Of Desire’, which featured in NME’s Best Albums of 2012. You can hear ‘Anxiety’s Door’, the first song from the EP by scrolling down the page.
Speaking about their new EP, Merchandise’s Carson Cox told NME the release, “Has nothing to do with love. It has more to do with self-realisation, your personal understanding of the world. My life isn’t all about the pursuit of a female. A lot of it is spent in disgust. The way my generation just eat the thing served up to them, a sort of ‘this is how you live an alternative life’. Nobody finds their own culture anymore. We’re given endless fucking freedom but no-one is adventurous with it.”
The ‘Totale Nite’ tracklisting is as follows:
‘Who Are You?’
‘I’ll Be Gone’
