Metallica want fans to pick setlist for summer 2014 tour

The band's 'by request' shows will allow fans to help choose the set list each night

Metallica have announced the first in a string of European dates for summer 2014.

The band are so far set to play three German shows at Sonisphere (June 4), Rock Im Park (6) and Rock am Ring (8), with more shows due to be added next week.

On top of announcing the shows themselves, the legendary rock outfit has also unveiled an added element to their forthcoming summer gigs. Entitled ‘Metallica By Request’, the shows will allow fans to help pick the set list each night from the band’s 30-plus year career. Each gig will be comprised of 18 songs – 17 of which will be decided by the 17 top tracks from the public vote, with one brand new song added and decided by the group.

Speaking about their decision to put the set list in the hands of the fans, Metallica singer Lars Ulrich said the following: “We are once again psyched to break free of the four walls of the studio to get energized by our devoted European friends for a couple of weeks next May and June. On top of that, the fact that all our nutty fans will pick the songs we play should be some next level fun and take a big load off my shoulders as the guy who usually writes the set list!”

Metallica also recently announced that they would play a gig on Antarctica, becoming only the second ever band to stage a music performance on the continent. The band will play inside a dome at the Argentine Antarctic Base Carlini on December 8, which will then be transmitted to competition-winning fans via headphones.

Tickets for ‘Metallica By Request’ will go on sale tomorrow (November 27) for Rock am Ring and Rock im Park, and Friday (29) for Sonisphere.
