The drummer has joked that they'll repeat Jay Z's opening Oasis cover from 2008
Speaking to The Guardian, the drummer said that they would replicate Jay Z’s opening track from his 2008 set, which the rapper played after Noel Gallagher said that he wasn’t right for the headline slot at the festival.
“Jay Z came out and played ‘Wonderwall’, right?” said Ulrich. “So maybe we gotta go out and do our rendition of ‘Wonderwall’. We’ll start with ‘Wonderwall’ and we’ll take it from there. Ha ha, listen, you’ve just gotta go out and be yourself and be proud of what you’re doing.”
Metallica will be appearing on the same bill as Iron Maiden at Sonisphere in July. When asked to comment on statements made by Bruce Dickinson of the band who has said that his band are better than Metallica, he said: “I will never argue with that. I will always support Bruce Dickinson in whatever nonsense he says. That’s part of the fun. So go Iron Maiden! It’s fine.”
Comparing setlists for Sonisphere – where the fans will have chosen the tracks as part of their ‘Metallica – By Request’ series of gigs – to Glastonbury, he commented: “Glastonbury will be a straight-up Metallica setlist, whatever that may mean, since it’s our first time playing there. I usually don’t write the setlist before about 15-30 minutes before we go onstage, depending on what the mood is in the camp.”
Mogwai recently dismissed Glastonbury headliners Metallica as being “unbelievably bad”. Other artists to pass comment on this year’s Saturday night headliners at the Worthy Farm Festival include Arctic Monkeys, Mick Jagger, Kasabian and Johnny Marr.
